Increasing traffic to your website.

Increasing traffic is becoming harder and harder each day as many people get on board the website-creation train. The competition for people's attention on cyberspace is the most fierce I have ever seen. Note that you the webmaster is competing with, not thousands, but millions of other people in getting that precious mindshare you are craving for. Not only that, you might be competing with a seasoned web designer who owns more than 2 websites. If you can guesstimate the number of websites on the Web you'll come to understand why Google spews out millions of results for certain search terms. But this need not worry you in any way. With a little of effort you can get to increase traffic to your website. Note that for the first few months, about 3-9, your website might get very little traffic. However, with these strategies you can grow your web traffic quite easily. Lets start it off with:

  1. SEO your website. There are so many websites discussing about this. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) involves:
    • Determining Keywords for your site.
    • Use of META tags, these being the Title, Description and Keyword Tags.
    • Using proper HTML in building your website.
    • Using Keywords in your links
  2. Take part in forums. By contributing in forums you can get the attention of its members who may end up visiting your site.
  3. Use Article Marketing. Write a good article and submit it to Article Directories.
  4. Submit your site to search engines so as to get organic traffic.
  5. Submit your site to Web Directories.
  6. Engage in Social Networking. You can do this by creating your Facebook/MySpace page, or getting into Twitter (Twitter marketing). In addition to the friends that you will make, your site will get an incoming link from the networking site.
  7. Sign up with an Advertising Network. On top of the code snippet that they give you, some advertising networks will place your website in their site directory. In short, you'll get a link from them while your site is pointing to them. (Oops! Did I say that),the limitation of this is that you can only be a valuable website on the network if your site draws in more visitors; the network uses your site to make money, remember!
  8. Publish a newsletter.
  9. Use Viral Marketing. Tell your friends and encourage them to tell others.
  10. Do not neglect offline traffic generating strategies such as taking part in trade shows, sponsorship deals, and using the print media.
  11. If you are a professional, you can join the local professional body and start from there.
  12. Submit your site to Pay Per Click search engines.
  13. Exchange links and banners with other sites that are in your niche.
  14. Place posters in Internet cafes.
  15. Hand out flyers that have your site's URL.
  16. Create some videos and post them on YouTube.

Don't use these...

  1. Tell A Friend Scripts. These scripts are now being used by spammers and spambots. Stay away from them.
  2. Single opt-in e-mail marketing strategies. Your website can be attacked by malicious people who can use this to send out spam.
  3. Don't create a wiki page for your site on Wikipedia. Wikipedia labels such pages as Wikispam and they are prime candidates for "Speedy Deletion".
  4. Don't promote your website on forums or blogs. Most of these consider such user-generated content as Comment Spam.
  5. Don't put your site as the browser's homepage on public computers. It is quite annoying when your site is the first to come up when someone starts up the browser. There is some element of, can I say, avarice when you use this technique to get people to visit your site. It can be disadvantageous if you do it on every public computer you get, more so if do it on many computers of a particular Internet cafe you go to frequently.

Other Strategies

  1. Place a bookmark of a page from your site on the Bookmarks Toolbar. This might work if you place it on public computers.
